2024 RTSports Outlook

Gibbs split work with David Montgomery much of last season, but still produced big numbers. He was 10th overall in fantasy running back scoring. Gibbs had 1,261 total yards and 11 touchdowns. Gibbs was especially big down the stretch and in the playoffs. He scored touchdowns all three of the Lions playoff games and seven of the last eight games he played his rookie season. Gibbs averaged a very impressive 5.2 yards per carry. And Gibbs was second in all of football in yards per carry after contact (2.5 per carry). He showed he was more than just a speed back, using his size and strength to his advantage. Gibbs should get more work this year from day one, but Montgomery remains around. This will limit his workload a little compared to other No. 1 backs. Gibbs is a slasher that can be a huge asset in the running and passing game. He is a true three-down back. He isn't a huge back but runs with power and makes plays after contact. Gibbs is already one of the top pass-catching backs in the game in just his second season in the NFL.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Gibbs would look a lot better if Montgomery were gone, but that isn't the case. He remains capable of building on last, though, and should be considered a top-10 fantasy back. His huge workload in the passing game gives him a great weekly floor. He can get around 1,600 total yards, 60 receptions and double-digit touchdowns.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Jahmyr Gibbs enters his second season having already demonstrated his ability to flourish in Detroit's surging offense - even though he functioned in an ongoing rotation with David Montgomery. Gibbs emerged as an explosive weapon that was capable of erupting for sizable yardage as both a rusher and receiver in 2023. Gibbs finished third in rushing yards during his final 11 games (766/69.6 per game), while assembling a league-high nine rushes of 20+ yards and vaulting to second in rushing touchdowns (10). He was also second in yards after contact per attempt (2.5) from Weeks 1-18 while finishing second among all backs with 50+ attempts in explosive run percentage (runs of 15+ yards) according to Fantasy Points Data (8.2%). Gibbs also ran 317 routes, was targeted on 22.4% of those routes, finished eighth in targets (71/4.7 per game), and rose to ninth in receptions (52/3.5 per game). Gibbs also operated as an RB1 for fantasy managers while vaulting to eighth overall in points per game (16.1), and soaring to fourth (18.5) from Weeks 7-18. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson will keep Gibbs highly involved in Detroit's distribution of touches. He will also operate behind an offensive line that returns four starters after finishing second in PFF's rankings during 2023. These favorable factors make Gibbs a back to prioritize late in Round 1 of dynasty startup and best-ball drafts.

Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes said this week on The Rich Eisen Show that second-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs could have an even bigger role in 2024. "I definitely would expect him to see more of a load, but David Montgomery will still be here too," Holmes said. "Dan and I love that 1-2 punch of him and David." The former first-round pick in 2023 was third among running backs with 5.2 yards per carry in his rookie campaign, so fantasy managers that were already fond of Gibbs' stock in a rising Lions offense will be pleased that he could be even more valuable as an RB1 in 2024. Not only should the 22-year-old former Alabama back see more carries, but he should also be more involved in the passing attack, where he can really excel with yards after the catch in open space. Only seven RBs saw more targets than Gibbs' 71 in 2023.

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed 12 times for 45 yards and a touchdown and caught three of his six targets for 11 yards in the NFC Championship Game loss to the San Francisco 49ers. It wasn't his best performance, and his tough day was capped off with a lost fumble on the second drive of the second half to give the 49ers the ball on the 24-yard line. Detroit went on to lose the game 34-31 after leading by 17 points at halftime. Although the turnover will be tough to get past, the 2023 first-round pick had a fantastic debut season with over 1,000 scrimmage yards and double-digit touchdowns. He should be one of the first running backs off the board in 2024 fantasy drafts.

Jan 25 1:00pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has had a solid start to his postseason career in the team's wins over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Rams. In those two contests, the first-round rookie rushed 17 times for 99 yards and a touchdown and caught all eight of his targets for 83 yards. He should be heavily involved in Detroit's offensive game plan against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. The Lions are a 7.5-point underdog in that contest, meaning they could be playing from behind. Gibbs had twice as many receptions (26) while the Lions were trailing during the regular season than he did when they were ahead (13). The Niners also surrendered the fifth-most receptions per game to running backs this year (5.3). Ultimately, the stars are aligned for Gibbs to flash his explosive skill set in the running and receiving game on Sunday.

Dynasty | Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs had 74 rushing yards, four catches, 40 receiving yards and a touchdown in the Lions playoff win against Tampa Bay. Dynasty Analysis: Gibbs may not be a true bell cow runner but he sure does produce in terms of fantasy stats. Today was no different as he busted through the Tampa Bay defense for a monster touchdown, sealing a long-anticipated Divisional round playoff win for the franchise. Gibbs was fantastic for most of the season and while he hasn't truly separated himself as a RB1, he's still a great player to build around and a borderline elite asset at the position. He'll attempt to keep things going against the 49ers in the NFC Championship next week.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Jan 21 5:40pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed nine times for 74 yards and caught four passes for 40 yards in the NFC Divisional Round win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gibbs delivered a 31-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter to help the Lions pull away in the 31-23 victory. The rookie remains a threat to score a touchdown or rip off a chunk play on every snap, so he remains a DFS next week despite a tough matchup with the talented San Francisco 49ers' defensive front.

Jan 18 1:10pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed eight times for 25 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for 48 yards in the NFC Wild Card win over the Los Angeles Rams. It was a solid performance for the rookie speedster, but his fantasy ceiling has proven to be much higher. Unfortunately, he's set to draw another tough matchup on Sunday against a Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense that surrendered the third-fewest fantasy points per game to running backs during the regular season. That said, Gibbs always has upside due to his explosiveness and pass-catching ability, meaning he should remain in consideration for GPP and cash game DFS contests. Ultimately, the 21-year-old has a boom-or-bust outlook in the second round of the NFL playoffs.

From RotoBaller

Jan 15 8:30am CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed eight times for 25 yards and caught all four of his targets for 43 yards in the Wild Card victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Although it wasn't the rookie's best rushing performance, he provided a spark as a pass-catcher and helped the Lions move the chains when it mattered. He continued to share work with David Montgomery, and both backs totaled exactly 68 yards. Next week, Detroit will host either the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Philadelphia Eagles. Both teams were strong against fantasy running backs in the regular season, but Gibbs' pass-catching upside combined with the Lions' elite offensive line will continue to make the speedster an attractive fantasy and DFS play.

Jan 11 2:20pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs exploded onto the scene as a rookie in 2023, rushing 182 times for 945 yards (5.2 YPC) and 10 touchdowns and catching 52 passes for 316 yards and one touchdown. He's set to play in his first playoff game on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. Los Angeles has allowed the second-fewest fantasy points per game to running backs, but Gibbs is explosive and a key piece of the team's passing game, so he always has fantasy and DFS upside. Especially if Sam LaPorta (knee) can't play, the speedster could see a ton of work through the air. Although he's been boom-or-bust lately, DFS is all about upside. For six-game contests on DraftKings, he's only the sixth-most expensive running back at $6,500.

Jan 7 4:00pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed 13 times for just 30 yards in the Week 18 win over the Minnesota Vikings. He did not catch his lone target, but he did reach the end zone on a three-yard run. It was far from his best fantasy performance of the season, but he salvaged his quiet day with a touchdown. The rookie speedster will be a high pick in 2024 fantasy drafts, and he's made a case to be the dynasty RB1 over the last half of the season. He'll likely continue to share touches with David Montgomery in 2024, but he'll have plenty of upside as an explosive rusher and receiver.

From RotoBaller

Jan 4 12:20pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is looking to bounce back from a rough Week 17 performance on Sunday. The rookie posted just 43 rushing yards and did not catch a pass in the loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He scored at least 20 PPR fantasy points in six of his last nine games prior to the down week, so he remains a high-upside fantasy and DFS play in Week 18. He'll face a Minnesota Vikings defense that has been stingy against running backs this year, but his pass-catching role and explosive skill set make him a must-start in all matchups. Once again, he and David Montgomery have plenty of upside behind the league's best offensive line.

From RotoBaller

Dec 31 12:20am CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs logged 15 carries for 43 yards in Saturday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys. David Montgomery led the way out of the backfield, with the former Bear finishing with 65 yards and a touchdown off 14 attempts. Unfortunately, Gibbs couldn't make up for it on the receiving end, considering he had just one catch that went nowhere. Nonetheless, despite the poor showing, Gibbs has played better this season than fantasy managers had expected. Keep him starting in Week 18 versus the Minnesota Vikings.

From RotoBaller

Dec 28 1:10pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been on fire in recent weeks, rushing for 246 yards and four rushing touchdowns and catching nine passes for 44 yards and a receiving touchdown over his last three games. Although Dallas has surrendered the 12th-fewest half-PPR fantasy points per game to running backs this season, the rookie from Alabama is a must-start. He has the explosiveness to rip off chunk plays, and if Detroit gets behind early, he should see a ton of targets in the passing game. While he and David Montgomery share red zone touches, this hasn't been a problem in recent weeks. Don't overthink it in this spot -- start Gibbs in leagues of all shapes and sizes.

From RotoBaller

Dec 24 7:30pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed 15 times for 80 yards and caught four of his seven targets for 20 yards in the Week 16 win over the Minnesota Vikings. The rookie speedster continued to be a mega-producer for fantasy football, so he hasn't done anything to take himself out of "must-start" territory. Fantasy managers who make the championship round should continue to start him with confidence. He and David Montgomery are both must-starts in one of the best offenses in the NFL.

From RotoBaller

Dec 21 2:00pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs was spectacular last week in a favorable matchup against the Denver Broncos, rushing 11 times for 100 yards and a touchdown and catching two passes for eight yards and another score. Although he'll face a tough matchup in Week 16, he has earned a "must-start" tag due to his upside. The rookie speedster has posted at least 23.1 half-PPR fantasy points in four of his last eight games. The Minnesota Vikings have surrendered the sixth-fewest fantasy points per game, but Gibbs has big-play ability and receiving skills that make him worth starting in the second round of the fantasy football playoffs.

From RotoBaller

Dec 17 8:10am CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed 11 times for 100 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's win over the Denver Broncos. He also contributed as a receiver, catching two passes for an additional eight yards and one touchdown through the air. When all was said and done, his final stat line included 108 scrimmage yards and a pair of scores. Needless to say, the rookie showed off his explosiveness on offense. Not only did he have a knack for finding the end zone on Saturday, but he was also quite efficient on the ground with a staggeringly high 9.1 YPC. He has certainly shown that he can co-exist with David Montgomery in the Lions' offense, all while Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta turn in big fantasy performances, too. Fantasy managers should treat Gibbs as a low-end RB1 when the Lions face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 16.

Dec 16 10:30pm CT

Lions' RB Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 100 yards on 11 carries with one touchdown in Saturday's win against the Broncos.

Dec 14 2:40pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs scored the sixth touchdown of his rookie season last week, and he'll have another opportunity for a productive day against the Denver Broncos in Week 15. Denver has allowed the most fantasy points per game to running backs this year, so Gibbs and backfield mate David Montgomery are both must-starts on Saturday. While one of the two can disappoint based on who gets the goal line and red zone touches, they have produced RB1 weeks in the same game before and have a chance to do it again in Week 15.

From RotoBaller

Dec 10 3:50pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed 11 times for 66 yards and a touchdown and caught three of his four targets for 16 yards in the Week 14 loss to the Chicago Bears. He saw one more touch than David Montgomery and continued the trend of seeing more usage when the Lions are trailing. Next week, Gibbs will face the Denver Broncos, who have surrendered the most fantasy points per game to running backs. He and Montgomery will both have must-start outlooks for the Saturday night contest.

From RotoBaller

Dec 7 1:00pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has cooled off in recent weeks, totaling just 15.2 half-PPR fantasy points in his last two games. The rookie speedster had a four-week stretch with at least 18.5 fantasy points, but David Montgomery is now healthy and commanding plenty of touches. However, Gibbs has still been efficient as a runner during his rough patch, posting 114 rushing yards on just 19 carries. His receiving workload has been the biggest issue, compiling just five catches for 13 yards in Week 12 and Week 13. The weekly touch distribution in the Lions backfield could vary week-to-week, so although Gibbs is no longer a "safe" play, he still has upside thanks to his big-play potential and receiving role. The Chicago Bears have surrendered the third-most receptions to running backs this season (6.1), so he has a real chance to get back on track in Sunday's NFC North contest.

From RotoBaller

Dec 3 4:20pm CT

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed eight times for 60 yards and caught one pass for a loss of six yards in the Week 13 win over the New Orleans Saints. Unfortunately for his fantasy managers, he did not find the end zone. With just one catch, he delivered a disappointing overall performance. He'll look to bounce back next week against the Chicago Bears, who have allowed the 11th-most fantasy points per game to running backs this season.
