Metcalf setup for a big Week 9
It is hard to believe but we are over the halfway mark of the fantasy season. Time flies, right? It is just crazy how fast things are moving this year. It is going to be Thanksgiving before you know it. Hopefully, things are going well for you this year. But if not, now might be the time to make a move in leagues that allow trading. A couple things to look at if you want to solidify your roster. Look at the playoff schedule of the players you are considering. We have a pretty good idea of the defenses to target. And I like to get players that have already had their bye while trading a player that might still have a bye. This just gives you a bit of an edge going forward in my view. We still have three weeks of byes to worry about. Just a couple of things to keep in mind before pulling the trigger on any trade.
Now for my random thoughts for the week. . . . .
The return of Christian Watson to the Packers lineup just clouds things even more with that receiving unit. I just hate to see so many quality options competing with each other for targets. Rookie Matthew Golden has been a big disappointment out of this group and should continue to be up and down in his current role. He has shown flashes but doesn’t get enough consistent work. Romeo Doubs plays the most but that doesn’t always translate to big production. And Dontayvion Wicks has made some big plays but done nothing other weeks. And Savion Williams is showing some potential but gets really sporadic work. All these guys are just making it tough to trust any of them on a weekly basis for fantasy teams. Not good.
I don’t blame the Saints for turning to Tyler Shough at quarterback. This team is going nowhere, so you might as well see what you have in the rookie. He looked pretty rough in the preseason, though, so that is a bit of a concern. He has some talent but remains raw. I would expect some erratic play from him the rest of the way. Don’t expect Shough to come in and play like Jaxson Dart has with the Giants. He has a long way to go to reach that level.
I continue to be amazed by Daniel Jones. He looks so good right now. I don’t think anyone saw this coming outside of Jones himself. And the funny thing to me is the competition was really close between him and Anthony Richardson for the starting job before the season. Many scratched their heads when Jones was named the starter, especially with Jones being kind of ho-hum during the preseason. Well, the Colts clearly made the right call. This offense is humming and the Colts might be the team to beat in the AFC right now. Just an amazing turnaround for Jones.
Not sure if you noticed, but Joe Flacco sure looks Ja’Marr Chase’s way often. I don’t think I can remember a player getting so heavily targeted from a quarterback. Chase had 19 targets last week and 23 the previous week. He has at least 12 targets and double-digit receptions all three games with Flacco as his starter. Chase has a great chance to move to the top of the fantasy receiver rankings in a hurry. He is on some kind of pace with Flacco throwing him passes. The trade of Flacco to the Bengals could end up winning a lot of Chase owners some fantasy titles this year.
You watch Dillon Gabriel and have to wonder how much longer the Browns keep playing him. He was awful last week, making some absolutely brutal decisions. Plus, he doesn’t seem to have the attributes to be a top starter in this league. He lacks arm strength and his anticipation isn’t very good. There was buzz about him before the draft that he might not pan out and much of that seems to be right on at the moment. I wonder how Shedeur Sanders looks in practice. Do the Browns really think he is any worse than Gabriel? I think they have to at least give him a look before the season is over to see what they have. Gabriel is not the answer.
All those Ladd McConkey has to be feeling pretty good right about now after his horrible start to the season. He has caught the eye of Justin Herbert once again and has 25 targets his last two games. This guy is an elite route runner and going to be a problem for secondaries for years to come. McConkey has at least 14 fantasy points four straight games and is third overall in fantasy receiver scoring his last three games. McConkey is going to have some really good numbers in the end. I expect him to keep it going.
News and Notes: The Raiders signed receiver Tyler Lockett on Monday. He could play an immediate role on his new team, reuniting with former teammate Geno Smith. . . . .The Saints named rookie Tyler Shough their starting quarterback for the Week 9 game. He takes over for Spencer Rattler. . . . .The Patriots have traded safety Kyle Dugger and a 2026 seventh-round selection to the Steelers for a 2026 sixth-round pick. . . . .The 49ers acquired defensive end Keion White and a seventh-round draft pick in 2026 from the Patriots on Tuesday in exchange for a sixth-rounder next year.
HOT PLAYS
Chase Brown, RB, Bengals. Brown is finally starting to play like his fantasy owners hoped. He is 12th overall in fantasy running back scoring his last three games. Brown has run 23 times for 181 yards and a touchdown his last two games. He is making big play after big play. You have to like his chances to keep it going against the Bears, a team that allows the eighth most fantasy points to running backs. The Bears allowed the Ravens to run for 177 yards against them this past week.
Daniel Jones, QB, Colts. Jones continues to play at a high level. His start to the season wasn’t a fluke. He had his third three-touchdown game of the season last week. He has 25-plus fantasy points three straight games. Jones has multiple touchdowns all but two games. He has been so consistent all season. Expect another good showing from Jones in Week 9 against the Steelers. Pittsburgh allows the second most fantasy points to quarterbacks and has given up 300-plus passing yards three of four games.
Kimani Vidal, RB, Chargers. Vidal hit the 100-yard mark last week, giving him 100-yard games two of his last three. He has clearly emerged as the lead back in this Chargers offense. Vidal also has 19-plus fantasy points two of three games. Vidal is running well and even getting work in the passing game, having eight receptions his last three games. Vidal can hit the 100-yard mark again this week against the Titans, a team that has allowed 160-plus rushing yards three of four games. Tennessee allows the third most fantasy points to running backs.
DK Metcalf, WR, Steelers. Metcalf isn’t posting huge numbers but very consistent, scoring touchdowns all but two games. He has at least 11 fantasy points all but a game. Metcalf gets it done on a weekly basis as the top target for Aaron Rodgers. We like him to see his yards increase this week against the Colts. The Steelers are going to need to score some points to keep up with the Colts offense. Plus, Indy allows the fifth most fantasy points to receivers.
Jaylen Waddle, WR, Dolphins. Waddle had five receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown last week against a really good Falcons secondary. It was an impressive performance. Waddle has 95 or more yards three of four games. He has become a must-start as the top receiver in the Dolphins passing game. He should get plenty of chances this week against the Ravens, a team that allows the second-most fantasy points to receivers.
COLD PLAYS
Alvin Kamara, RB, Saints. Kamara is the clear lead back but he has been a bust this year. He has fewer than double-digit fantasy points three of four games. He has not topped 35-rushing yards in four games and yet to have a 100-yard rushing game this year. Kamara has been a big-time fantasy player but you can’t start him based off past production. He isn’t getting it done and could struggle again this week against the Rams. Los Angeles allows the second fewest fantasy points to running backs and fewer than 100-rushing yards four of five games.
Keon Coleman, WR, Bills. Coleman has pretty much disappeared since a huge Week 1 performance, getting all his fantasy owners excited. He has one touchdown since the season opener and has not topped 50 yards in a single game. Coleman has been a huge disappointment once again. We know he could be involved in a high-scoring game against the Chiefs, but he is so hard to trust. We just shy away from him against a defense that allows the sixth fewest fantasy points to receivers.
Hunter Henry, TE, Patriots. Henry scored a touchdown last week but that was his only catch in the game. He has posted some decent fantasy numbers but his year but that was early in the season, having double-digit fantasy points three of his first four games. He has not topped eight fantasy points in a game since Week 4. Things won’t get any easier for him this week against the Falcons. Atlanta has completely shut down the tight end this year, allowing the fewest fantasy points to tight ends. Their entire pass defense has been great, allowing less than 200-passing yards every game.
Rico Dowdle, RB, Panthers. Dowdle played just 36 percent of the snaps last week, his lowest total since Week 2. This is a little concerning, seeing his playing time and production in recent weeks start to dwindle. Dowdle didn’t even catch a pass last week, which really hurts his fantasy floor. We would worry about him this week against the Packers, a team that allows the third fewest fantasy points to running backs. Green Bay has allowed more than 100-rushing yards just one game all season.
C.J. Stroud, QB, Texans. Stroud was fantastic last week against a good 49ers secondary. He threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns without his No. 1 receiver. San Francisco had some injuries in that game, though, so it was a little skewed in Stroud’s favor. Stroud has been up and down throughout the year, having fewer than 18 fantasy points each of his first three games. He remains more of a matchup play and a game against the Broncos isn’t a great one for him. We know cornerback Patrick Surtain is out but this defense remains very good. Denver allows the fourth fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks and their intense pressure should impact Stroud throwing the ball.
SLEEPERS
Alec Pierce, WR, Colts. Pierce has played at least 81 percent of the snaps three straight games. He is the top big-play threat in the Colts passing game. Pierce averages 23.9 yards per receptions his last three games, showing that big-play ability. You have to like him to break off a big play or two this week against the Steelers. Pittsburgh allows the fourth most fantasy points to receivers. The Steelers have allowed at least 250-passing yards all but two games.
Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Dolphins. Tagovailoa had his first four-touchdown game of the season last week. And he did this against a very good Falcons defense. It was a great performance after two really poor showings. You never know what you are going to get with Tagovailoa but maybe he can build on last week against a poor Ravens pass defense. The Dolphins are going to need to score some points this week if they hope to stay in this game. This bodes well for Tagovailoa to air it out often. Baltimore allows the fourth most fantasy points to quarterbacks and has allowed 250-plus passing yards three of four games.
Colston Loveland, TE, Bears. Loveland hasn’t exactly been off the charts with Cole Kmet out but does have three receptions each of his last two games. He has been targeted nine times, so he is getting some looks. It would not surprise to see him have his best game as a pro this week against a terrible Bengals defense. Cincinnati allows the most fantasy points to tight ends and at least 247-passing yards all but a game. Loveland might be worth taking a chance on this week.
Bam Knight, RB, Cardinals. The Cardinals released Michael Carter this week, so Knight is really the last man standing in the Cardinals backfield right now. Knight has touchdowns two of three games and at least nine fantasy points all three games. His numbers haven’t been off the charts but solid. Look for maybe his best game of the year this week against the Cowboys. Dallas allows the second most fantasy points to running backs and at least 136-rushing yards five straight games.
Travis Hunter, WR, Jaguars. The Jaguars are coming out of a bye week, so look for them to get Hunter more involved in the offense this week. He is coming off his best game of the season, catching eight passes for 101 yards and a touchdown on 14 targets. He has been targeted 21 times his last two games. Hunter should get plenty of looks this week against the Raiders, a team that allows the third most fantasy points to receivers.
High/Low Scoring Games
Each week we will take a look at some of the high and low scoring games for the coming week. In high scoring affairs, get your marginal players on those teams in your lineup to take advantage of the possible points barrage. And in the low scoring games, keep those marginal players on the bench and make sure to have your defenses involved in those contests.
High Scoring Games: Ravens/Dolphins, Bears/Bengals, Colts/Steelers, Chiefs/Bills, Cardinals/Cowboys.
Low Scoring Games: Broncos/Texans, Saints/Rams.
Bye Weeks: Browns, Jets, Eagles, Bucs.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (toe), still affected by a turf toe injury suffered in Week 1 and reaggravated in Week 4, missed a fifth consecutive game in Week 9. Head coach Kyle Shanahan referred to Purdy's injury as "probably something that doesn't go away all year, regardless of when he comes back," as reported by The Athletic's Vic Tafur. Based on Shanahan's assessment, Purdy will be playing through pain if and when he resumes starting duties. Doing so would limit his mobility and, in turn, potentially affect his effectiveness. Until Purdy can get healthy enough for game action, Mac Jones will remain under center for San Francisco. Jones improved to 5-2 with the 49ers' 34-24 win over the Giants on Sunday. Should his role as interim starter extend to Week 10, he will face a Rams defense he gouged for 342 yards and two touchdowns in Week 5.

Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (knee) and rookie cornerback Shavon Revel (knee) are "trending" toward playing in Week 11 against the Las Vegas Raiders, according to Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas News. Overshown suffered a torn ACL, MCL, and PCL in December of last season and has been on the Physically Unable to Perform List for most of the season. His 21-day practice window was opened on October 22, and he'll be set to return following the team's Week 10 bye. Revel, on the other hand, has also been recovering from a torn ACL suffered in September 2024 during his final season at East Carolina. The rookie third-rounder began the season on the Reserve/Non-Football Injured List and is trending towards making his NFL debut in Week 11. Overshown and Revel could be big players to get back for a struggling Dallas defense. They'll be expected to be joined by Dallas' two trade deadline acquisitions in linebacker Logan Wilson and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

Cincinnati Bengals tight end Noah Fant caught two of his three targets for 28 yards and a touchdown in a thrilling 47-42 loss against the Chicago Bears in Week 9. Fant caught his third touchdown of the season and has now recorded multiple receptions in four straight games. Fant had little involvement in this game despite it being one of the highest scoring games we will see all season. Since posting a season high 73.5% route share in Week 7, the 27-year-old has dipped to 33.3% and 44% in each of the past two weeks. The targets in Cincinnati's offense are heavily consolidated around the top two wideouts in Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase, and with Fant's route share being limited in back-to-back games, fantasy managers should likely look elsewhere if searching for a streamer at tight end for Week 10.
From RotoBaller
Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth scored his third touchdown of the season in Sunday's 27-20 win over the AFC-leading Indianapolis Colts. Freiermuth has gotten rolling a bit after a slower start to the year, recording at least three receptions in each of the past three games and scoring all three touchdowns. The 27-year-old leads the team in receiving yards in that time and ranks as TE4 in total PPR points (44.1). It's fueled almost entirely by his five catches, 111-yard, two-touchdown performance against the horrendous Cincinnati Bengals defense on Thursday night in Week 7. The usage isn't there to justify Freiermuth all of a sudden jumping to TE1 status in fantasy. Freiermuth profiles as a low-end streaming option against the Chargers on Sunday Night Football in Week 10.
From RotoBaller
Washington Commanders running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. had his best game of the season in Sunday night's blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks, handling 12 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown. Rodriguez scored his second touchdown of the season, while the 12 carries and 65 yards were both the second-highest totals of his three-year career. The 25-year-old saw the same number of carries as rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt and could be working his way back into a timeshare on early downs, with the rookie struggling on the ground of late. Rodriguez is a physical, bruising back that will get the yardage that is blocked for him and adds a few more after contact as he's always falling forward. The Washington offense will be without star quarterback Jayden Daniels (elbow) for the foreseeable future, but Marcus Mariota is capable of running the same style of offense. Rodriguez offers waiver wire value in deeper leagues headed into Week 10.
From RotoBaller
Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts Sr. drew another seven targets in Week 9's 24-23 loss to the Patriots, converting them into four catches for 38 yards. While his continued involvement in the passing attack has been a welcome change compared to the underwhelming production of the past few seasons, it hasn't amounted to much for fantasy, as the 25-year-old has just a single touchdown on the season. Also, althoughhe's on pace for 91 receptions, which would obliterate his previous career high of 68, the 6-foot-6 tight end is pacing for 812 yards, which would be more than last season's 602 yards but would fall well short of his career high of 1,026 that was set in his rookie season of 2021. Still, with two more red zone targets this past Sunday, the fifth-year pro could be on the verge of his big breakout performance of 2025, and he'll get a favorable matchup against the Colts in Germany this week versus a defense that's yielded a touchdown to an opposing tight end for four straight weeks now.
From RotoBaller
Despite being rumored as a potential candidate to be moved, Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Ford will remain with his team through the 2025 trade deadline. The 26-year-old has mostly been limited to a passing-downs role in Cleveland this season, recording 149 scrimmage yards on 42 touches across eight games played. However, Ford could play an expanded role in his team's Week 10 matchup against the New York Jets. Star rookie running back Quinshon Judkins (shoulder) suffered an AC joint sprain in Cleveland's final game before their Week 9 bye, putting his availability for Week 10 in question. Even if Judkins is out, Ford would likely split backfield work in Cleveland with Dylan Sampson. Still, Ford would profile as at least a low-end flex option for fantasy managers in most formats in a favorable matchup against New York if Judkins cannot play.
From RotoBaller
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (knee) has not yet played this season as he recovers from the devastating knee injury he suffered seven games into his 2024 campaign. Aiyuk appears to be multiple weeks away from a return, as the team is not opening his 21-day practice window ahead of its Week 10 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. In his last healthy season in 2023, Aiyuk recorded 75 catches for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns on 105 targets across 16 games. There's no questioning the 27-year-old's ability to be productive when he's on the field; it's just a matter of when Aiyuk's knee will be healthy enough for him to return. Fantasy managers should have minimal expectations for Aiyuk's 2025 production. Still, in leagues with IR spots, Aiyuk could be a low-risk flier worth stashing.
From RotoBaller
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed (collarbone, foot) has been on Injured Reserve since suffering a broken collarbone in Week 2. Reed also underwent foot surgery, so he's recovering from multiple injuries. Still, it appears as though the 25-year-old could be nearing a return. Across 17 games in 2024, Reed recorded 55 catches for 857 yards and six touchdowns on 75 targets. He'll join a crowded Packers wide receiver room upon his return and should see stiff competition for playing time and targets from Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, and Matthew Golden. However, Green Bay lost star tight end Tucker Kraft (knee) to a torn ACL in Week 9, potentially opening up opportunities in the passing game. Reed may not be active for his team's Week 10 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, but he still may be worth adding off the waiver wire now in fantasy leagues with 12 or more teams.
From RotoBaller
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Malik Washington recorded a season-high 48 receiving yards on three catches in his team's Week 9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The 24-year-old has struggled with efficiency so far this season, logging just 183 yards on 28 catches (6.5 yards per catch). Still, Washington has emerged as a consistent target-earner since Miami lost star wideout Tyreek Hill (knee) to a season-ending knee injury in Week 4. Washington has earned at least five targets in four out of his last five games played. His upside is limited, but Washington should continue to provide a relatively stable fantasy floor in PPR-scoring formats. Heading into a Week 10 matchup with the Buffalo Bills, Washington is worth rostering in PPR leagues with 12 or more teams.
From RotoBaller
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman has recorded just 15 catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns on 29 targets across eight games played in 2025. However, Bateman recorded his second touchdown reception of the season in Week 9, Baltimore's first game with quarterback Lamar Jackson under center since Week 4. Across 17 games with Jackson in 2024, Bateman recorded 45 catches for 756 yards and nine touchdowns on 72 targets. Bateman will likely remain a low-target-volume player, but Jackson's return to the lineup should unlock his big-play ability. In fantasy leagues with 14 or more teams, Bateman could be worth targeting on the waiver wire heading into a Week 10 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.
From RotoBaller
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones turned in his worst performance of the season in a 27-20 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 9. Jones completed 31 of his 50 passes for 342 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions while adding a rushing touchdown as well. The veteran quarterback came into the game with just three interceptions all season, thus doubling his number in that area in the disappointing loss. Jones will look to bounce back at home against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 10. Atlanta has been tough on quarterbacks this season, allowing just the 27th-most fantasy points per game to the position. That being said, Jones has earned enough leeway thanks to his strong play this season to be considered as a low-end QB1 in fantasy for that matchup.
From RotoBaller
Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor finally cooled off in a 27-20 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 9. Taylor carried the ball 14 times for 45 yards while catching both of his targets for 12 yards in the disappointing loss to Pittsburgh. It was the first time all season that Taylor had been held to fewer than 66 rushing yards and just the third time in nine games that he was held out of the end zone. Taylor will now head back home to face off against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 10. Atlanta has struggled to slow opposing rushing attacks this season, allowing the 10th-most fantasy points per game to running backs in eight games. Taylor remains a rock-solid RB1 in all fantasy formats heading into Week 10's contest.
From RotoBaller
Indianapolis Colts tight end Tyler Warren turned in a quiet game in a Week 9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Warren caught five of his seven targets for just 26 yards in the loss, a season-low in receiving yards for the breakout rookie. The first-year tight end will look to move past his quietest game as a pro in a Week 10 home matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons have dominated enemy tight ends this season, allowing the fewest fantasy points per game to the position thus far. Warren remains a main piece of the Indy passing attack, but fantasy managers would be wise to temper expectations heading into Week 10. He is looking more like a low-end TE1 this coming weekend in all fantasy formats.
From RotoBaller
Dynasty | Jets running back Breece Hall was not traded prior to Tuesday's deadline. Dynasty Analysis: This is a situation where no news is actually news as Hall was rumored to be of interest to several contenders. In reality, him staying in New York is a pretty big disappointment as dynasty managers were clearly hoping he'd land in a better spot this year prior to hitting free agency. With the Jets waving the white flag and sending away both Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams, things aren't going to get much easier for Hall as he's now clearly on a tanking team. This could also be a decent buying window as the talented Hall is very unlikely to be on the Jets after this season.
Dynasty | The Saints did not trade wide receiver Chris Olave prior to Tuesday's deadline. Dynasty Analysis: Olave was rumored to be of interest to several teams, including the Bills (let your imagination wander). However, the Saints kept him in the hopes they could sign him to an extension. We'll see if that pans out in the end, but anyone with Olave on their dynasty roster has to be at least a little disappointed. Let's face it - Olave has a high floor and a low ceiling in an offense led by Tyler Shough or Spencer Rattler.
Dynasty | The Cardinals will start Jacoby Brissett this week against Seattle. Dynasty Analysis: Murray's foot injury is said to still be a factor but it's not hard to read the tea leaves here as Arizona seems to have soured on Murray as their present and future at the position. It's a stunning turn of events on paper but it's also obvious to everyone that Jacoby Brissett has simply played better than Murray, which doesn't bode well for his future. We'll see what happens in the coming weeks but expecting Murray to stay with the Cardinals next season seems pretty far-fetched. His ADP is going to take a nose dive this week.
New Orleans Saints tight end Juwan Johnson has put together three strong performances over the last few weeks. On Sunday, Johnson hauled in three of his four targets for 31 yards and a touchdown in the loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Before that, Johnson had posted back-to-back five-catch games for the Saints. It's worth noting that the Saints traded wide receiver Rashid Shaheed on Tuesday, so Johnson could see more passes coming his way. Johnson is worth rostering in most fantasy formats and is someone to consider as a streaming option for the Week 10 matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
From RotoBaller
Dallas Cowboys running back Malik Davis has been waived by the organization on Tuesday. Davis was signed off the practice squad ahead of Monday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. The 26-year-old has seen a minimal role in the backfield over the last two games. Davis has rushed three times for six yards over the last two games. His absence isn't going to make much of an impact on the Cowboys backfield going forward.
From RotoBaller
Denver Broncos kicker Wil Lutz (illness) was listed as a non-participant during Tuesday's estimated practice. The team should offer more on his status soon, but this is somewhat concerning with a quick turnaround against the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday. The veteran kicker knocked down his lone extra point and 1-of-2 field goal attempts during Sunday's win over the Houston Texans. Lutz figures to be ready for Thursday's game, but fantasy managers will have a better idea after Wednesday's practice session.
