Ravens OC Todd Monken responds to John Harbaugh's critique of KC plan

Only the Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills have more points than the Baltimore Ravens this season, so head coach John Harbaugh's critique of the approach and execution of play-caller Todd Monken at Kansas City raised a few eyebrows.

Monken said he wasn't alarmed by anything Harbaugh said on the heels of the Ravens' third loss in four games, 37-20 to the Chiefs. The Ravens had a season-low 20 points, went 3 of 10 on third downs and 1 of 4 on fourth down in a game that ended with quarterback Lamar Jackson on the sideline nursing a hamstring injury.

"There's not one thing John said that we didn't already talk about. Not one thing. So, there was nothing about it that I hadn't already heard or that he didn't already feel," Monken said Friday. "One thing I've done throughout my career is that you've got to look at what you do. How do we scheme it? What was our plan?

"When it's below the line (expected), you have to own it and fix it. That's what you do. That's what we do as human beings. That's how I got to where I am now. You look at it, and you say, 'OK, was that good enough?' The expectation here is to be elite, and we've been elite. We're going to continue to be elite, but I have to do it better. We've got to do it better."

The Ravens are third in the NFL with 131 points -- Detroit has 137, Buffalo 133 -- but have given up 133. A taxed defense is dealing with its own stack of injuries.

At Kansas City, Harbaugh also said the Ravens didn't follow through on a team-wide game plan to handle the Chiefs' pass-rush pressure. Monken was working with a familiar call sheet, but Baltimore left tackle Ronnie Stanley (ankle), center Tyler Linderbaum (calf) functioning at reduced capacity and Jackson reportedly playing more than two quarters with a strained hamstring before hitting the bench in favor of Cooper Rush.

"I already addressed it. We've already talked about it. We didn't execute the way we planned," Monken said.

The Ravens have allowed 15 sacks in four games and Jackson was sacked seven times the last time Baltimore played at home in Week 3, a 38-30 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Jackson did not practice again Friday and was idle most of the week during on-field portions of team workouts. He could miss his first game due to injury since 2022, when he suffered a sprained knee and sat out the final five games of the regular season and the playoff loss to the Bengals.

Rush, 4-4 last season as Dak Prescott's injury replacement for the Cowboys, is 9-5 in his career as a starter. Monken said he and Rush have worked overtime to be ready for any instance when Jackson can't take the field.

"As athletic as Coop is, some of those things are not going to look the same as Lamar," Monken said. "But that doesn't mean you can't still be effective and efficient."

Sunday is the first of three consecutive home games for Baltimore. The Ravens play at home again next week, facing the Los Angeles Rams (3-2), before a bye in Week 7.

Bender's Running Back Rundown: Week 5

Player Notes
Tua Tagovailoa Oct 5 7:50pm ET
Tua Tagovailoa

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa completed 27 of 36 pass attempts for 256 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions during Sunday's Week 5 loss against the Carolina Panthers. He also rushed for five yards and took three sacks. Tagovailoa played well early in the game, pulling out to a 17-0 lead. However, Miami's offense eventually stalled and lost to the Panthers after a fourth quarter that saw three different lead changes. Fortunately for Tagovailoa's fantasy managers, his fantasy score doesn't factor in whether the Dolphins won or lost. As long as Miami is playing in close games or trailing, Tagovailoa will be passing a lot, which gives him plenty of fantasy upside going forward. He's a high-end QB2 in fantasy football heading into Week 6 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Omarion Hampton Oct 5 7:50pm ET
Omarion Hampton

Los Angeles Chargers running back Omarion Hampton (left ankle) was seen wearing a walking boot following Sunday's Week 5 loss against the Washington Commanders. The rookie injured himself in the third quarter and was not able to return. He finished Week 5 with 12 carries for 44 rushing yards, as well as six catches for 26 receiving yards. The 22-year-old wasn't able to replicate his top-tier showings from the previous two weeks, but he still turned in a solid fantasy performance, largely thanks to his involvement in the passing game. Unfortunately, Hampton's status for Week 6 is already murky, and a walking boot typically isn't a good sign. Fantasy managers should monitor Hampton's practice participation throughout the week. If healthy, he'll rank as a low-end RB1 against the Miami Dolphins. If not, he'd be inactive while leaving Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal to split lead-back duties.

Xavier Worthy Oct 5 7:40pm ET
Xavier Worthy

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy (shoulder, ankle) is expected to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5 despite being listed as questionable, according to Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated. The Chiefs made a late adjustment to their injury report that called Worthy's status into doubt just 24 hours before kickoff, but Verderame has reassured fantasy managers that "the expectation is [Worthy] will be okay." Nevertheless, given the timing of Monday Night Football, managers might want to add someone like JuJu Smith-Schuster or Tyquan Thornton, who can be seamlessly inserted into lineups if Worthy suffers a setback and can't play against the Jaguars.

Los Angeles Chargers running back Omarion Hampton (left ankle) exited during the third quarter of Sunday's Week 5 contest against the Washington Commanders. The rookie was listed as questionable to return, but he never ended up getting back into the game. Xavier Worthy Oct 5 7:20pm ET
Xavier Worthy

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy (shoulder, ankle) is questionable to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday Night Football in Week 5. Although Worthy did not initially carry an injury designation into the weekend, the Chiefs have revised their injury report and are listing him as questionable just 24 hours before kickoff. This is something that fantasy managers should monitor, though there might not be a whole lot that you can do about it. 24 teams have already played games, which means the majority of rostered players are locked in fantasy leagues, making it difficult to change your lineup or add any players. Managers heavily invested in Worthy's availability should see if they can add a receiver like JuJu Smith-Schuster or Tyquan Thornton before the final two games of Week 5 kick off, in case he ends up being inactive.

Justin Fields Oct 5 7:10pm ET
Justin Fields

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields completed 32 of 46 pass attempts for 283 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions during Sunday's Week 5 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He took five sacks but also rushed for 26 yards. Although the Jets are 0-5 this season, Fields has been quite productive from a fantasy perspective. In the three games where he has been fully healthy, Fields is averaging 28.2 fantasy points. He has seven total touchdowns and zero interceptions this year, though he also has two lost fumbles to his name. We've known about his rushing ability for quite some time, but we're also starting to see flashes of what he can do throwing the football -- even if it comes in garbage time. The Ohio State product is a mid-to-low fantasy QB1 for Week 6 against a strong Denver Broncos defense.

Tip Reiman Oct 5 6:50pm ET
Tip Reiman

Arizona Cardinals tight end Tip Reiman (right leg) was carted to the locker room during the second half of Sunday's Week 5 contest against the Tennessee Titans. He suffered the injury after failing to haul in his first and only target of the game. Given the urgency of the Cardinals' medical personnel to get the cart on the field for Reiman, this could be a very serious injury, and it's likely one that will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the contest. He has merely occupied a depth role in Arizona this season, catching just three passes for 18 yards. Elijah Higgins will step up as the No. 2 tight end behind Trey McBride.

Kalif Raymond Oct 5 6:40pm ET
Kalif Raymond

Detroit Lions wide receiver Kalif Raymond (neck) exited during the first half of Sunday's Week 5 contest against the Cincinnati Bengals. Although he was initially listed as questionable to return, he has since been downgraded to out. Raymond finishes the game with a kick return and a punt return, but no offensive targets. Grant Stuard and Jacob Saylors should handle return duties for the duration of his absence.

Dak Prescott Oct 5 6:20pm ET
Dak Prescott

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott completed 18 of 29 pass attempts for 237 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions during Sunday's Week 5 win over the New York Jets. He also rushed for 28 yards and only took one sack. After stringing together some modest performances near the start of the season, Prescott has come on exceptionally strong lately, racking up eight touchdowns and zero turnovers in his last two contests. He has been able to play at a top-tier level despite being without his top receiver, CeeDee Lamb (ankle). The 32-year-old remains a strong mid-range QB1 option heading into next week's clash with the Carolina Panthers.

Javonte Williams Oct 5 6:10pm ET
Javonte Williams

Dallas Cowboys running back Javonte Williams rushed for 135 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries during Sunday's Week 5 win over the New York Jets. He also caught a four-yard touchdown pass. Williams is enjoying a terrific career resurgence in Dallas, scoring six touchdowns through five games while averaging 20.7 fantasy points (PPR) per contest. He has ranked as a mid-range RB1 so far this season, and with a firm grasp on the lead-back role, he remains a must-start fantasy option going forward. Williams has been an enormous fantasy draft steal with league-winning potential as the Cowboys' offense plays quite well. He should continue to feast next week against the Carolina Panthers.

Kalif Raymond

Detroit Lions wide receiver Kalif Raymond (neck) exited during the first half of Sunday's Week 5 contest against the Cincinnati Bengals. He is officially questionable to return. At the time of his departure, he had two special teams returns but had not been targeted on offense. Grant Stuard and Jacob Saylors should handle return duties for the duration of Raymond's absence.

C.J. Stroud Oct 5 5:40pm ET
C.J. Stroud

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud completed 23 of 27 pass attempts for 244 yards, nine touchdowns, and zero interceptions during Sunday's Week 5 win over the Houston Texans. He also broke off a 30-yard rush and took two sacks. The former No. 2 pick showed flashes of his rookie self as the Texans took advantage of an injury-riddled Ravens defense. Stroud set his season high in completion rate, passing yards, and passing touchdowns along the way. This was a very soft matchup for the young quarterback, so Sunday's result doesn't necessarily mean he's back to being a high-end QB1 every week. However, at the very least, the big game should give him some confidence going forward and give the Texans something to build off of and learn from. Houston has a Week 6 bye, which means they'll have an extra week to figure out what went right as they develop their game plan for Week 7 against Seattle.

Jonathan Taylor Oct 5 5:30pm ET
Jonathan Taylor

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor rushed 17 times for 66 yards and three touchdowns during Sunday's Week 5 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. He also caught three of four targets for an additional 20 receiving yards. While Taylor merely had modest yardage efficiency, he made up for it with his nose for the end zone. Taylor has had two different three-touchdown games over the last three weeks, and he ranks as the overall RB2 in fantasy football this season. He is also the league's leading rusher and has seven touchdowns. He should be deployed as a high-end RB1 every week, including next week against the Arizona Cardinals.

Brock Bowers Oct 5 5:20pm ET
Brock Bowers

Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers (knee) is day-to-day, according to head coach Pete Carroll. Bowers is dealing with a bone bruise and PCL injury, and while the team had hoped a few extra days of rest would help, that wasn't the case. Carroll noted that, as kickoff drew near, it became clear that Bowers wouldn't be able to play in Sunday's game. At the moment, it's uncertain whether the star tight end will be ready for Week 6 against the Tennessee Titans. While Las Vegas presumably won't rush him back, they'd like to get Bowers on the field sooner rather than later. The team is incredibly short-staffed at tight end with Bowers and Michael Mayer (concussion) out, which left them with Albert Okwuegbunam and Ian Thomas as their top tight ends this past Sunday against Indianapolis.

Rico Dowdle Oct 5 5:00pm ET
Rico Dowdle

Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle carried the ball 23 times for 206 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown during Sunday's Week 5 win over the Miami Dolphins. He also caught three of four targets for an additional 28 receiving yards. Dowdle filled in for the injured Chuba Hubbard (calf) and turned in one of the best individual fantasy performances we've seen through five weeks this season. He proved to be a terrific waiver wire addition for many fantasy managers who inserted him into their lineups on Sunday. Even if Hubbard returns next week, Dowdle has done more than enough to carve out a significant role on offense. He's worth deploying as an RB3/flex with RB2 upside going forward, including next week in a revenge game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Darius Slayton Oct 5 4:00pm ET
Darius Slayton

New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton (hamstring) exited during the second half of Sunday's Week 5 contest against the New Orleans Saints. He is officially questionable to return. He struggled with drops when on the field, catching just three of six targets for 31 yards. The Giants continue to deal with wide receiver injuries, as they were already without Malik Nabers (knee), who is done for the year. Wan'Dale Robinson will remain New York's primary wide receiver while wide receiver Jalin Hyatt and tight ends Daniel Bellinger and Theo Johnson earn more targets from Jaxson Dart.

Will Dissly Oct 5 3:30pm ET
Will Dissly

Los Angeles Chargers tight end Will Dissly (knee) is inactive for Sunday's Week 5 contest against the Washington Commanders. He had been listed as questionable and seemed to be trending in the right direction after logging a full practice Friday, but in the end, the Chargers decided to make him inactive. Oronde Gadsden will operate as Los Angeles' primary tight end while Tyler Conklin fills a depth role.

Grant Calcaterra Oct 5 3:20pm ET
Grant Calcaterra

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Grant Calcaterra (oblique) exited during the first half of Sunday's Week 5 contest against the Denver Broncos. He was initially listed as questionable but has since been downgraded to out. At the time of his departure, he had two receptions for 18 yards. Kylen Granson will step up as the Eagles' No. 2 tight end behind Dallas Goedert.

Will Johnson Oct 5 3:10pm ET
Will Johnson

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Greg Dortch (collarbone) and cornerback Will Johnson (groin) are active for Sunday's Week 5 contest against the Tennessee Titans. Both players had been listed as questionable after being limited in practice this past week. Dortch has been a contributor in all four games this year, catching a total of eight passes while returning nine kicks and six punts. He's off the fantasy radar but could eventually have streaming appeal if Marvin Harrison Jr. or Michael Wilson were to get injured. Meanwhile, Johnson is returning from a two-game absence. He last played in Week 2 when he logged a 62 percent snap share and made three tackles. He'll look to make an impact against a subpar Titans offense.

Calvin Ridley Oct 5 2:40pm ET
Calvin Ridley

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley (knee, elbow) is officially active for his team's Week 5 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Ridley practiced just once this week but will give it a go on Sunday. The 30-year-old is off to a slow start to the 2025 season with 10 catches for 141 yards and zero touchdowns on 24 targets through four games. Ridley profiles as a low-end flex option in three-wide receiver leagues in Week 5 against Arizona.
